  • Amazing what the racing harness and seat can do to protect the neck and back and the race suits from the fire.

  • I always thought the fuel tank being moved forward of the rear axle was in response to this accident but having rewatched it just now they said it was already planned and this crash simply proved why it was needed.

  • To say 'The race that changed supercars forever' is a total misnomer, if not an outright lie. The car of the future was already well underway by this stage, it's even talked about by the commentators at length.

  • You have to give massive credit to the engineers from Kelly brothers Racing, The Fair Dinkum teams, HRT and Brad Jones who just leapt over the wall without thinking

  • standing stars? nothing wrong with that. an exposed fuel cell with basically no protection against a crash in the back? whoever that THAT was good idea? thankfully, they learned from that.

  • even when a car catches on fire- its still a boring car race compared to the production races we used to watch before the stupidcars change…

  • Race control should be in all drivers headsets on the starts and call out stalled cars on whatever side they sit on. So scary

  • at least this happened at the back of the pack, not at the front somewhere. More would have been involved and the race would have been over

  • crickey mate, its bloody hot enough out there already! had to laugh at the roll on the floor, but that was the residual heat transferring through… but lol

  • I can’t believe nobody has mentioned Reindler started from position 13. He had some luck on his side that day to escape that relatively unharmed

  • I remember watching on the day thinking the marshal was going to drop to “stalled car” sign from the starter ‘s rostrum. I stopped caring when the fuel cell erupted, that’s for sure.

  • For 150kmh impact it looks pretty fine. Nothing the Polish couldn't fix and sell as "just from Germany, no crashes, 1 owner".

  • I remember watching that crash live. I was in shock! I don't think I said a word before Karl climbed out of that car.

My mum was with me and I can recall her audibly gasping in horror on what we watched.

Even today that crash shocks me.

  • Was watching some of the older touring cars the last few days and getting nostalgic, this video is what I needed to see. Easy to understand why COTF was so important. This is what happens when you race actual road based touring cars.

  • I miss the old Aussie Holden and Aussie Ford days. Instead of the Current Mustang Cup. But obviously this can’t happen as Aussie manufacturing is gone. I think it’s time to do truly
international racing with all manufacturers competing in the same format as the past. Then Supercars will survive in the future….
